How the paintings develop - Llanberis & The Pyg Track
'Thundering Thrills' Llanberis Valley and The Pyg Track, Yr Wyddfa Acrylic on 16.5" x 11.7" canvas board September 2025 A4 to A1 size limited edition giclee prints. I think white or black frame works best with this piece. It started with blagging a lift from one of the Ourea team (thanks Lisa) to Pen y Pass car park as the rain was lashing down but I knew there'd be some moody views if I braved it! A lovely run up the Pyg Track cheering on the runners and taking photos as I w

Diolch yn fawr, Cymru!
Enjoying a bit of better weather - Rhinog Fach & Llyn Hywel It's been a fantastic couple of weeks, as artist in residence at the Dragons Back Race and then back home getting lots of interest in the paintings and prints. Thank you Wales for the awesome landscapes and, of course, the Welshcakes! Also thank you to the runners who supported me en route and those who have bought prints and paintings since. Once again, thanks to Shane and Ourea Events for inviting me to join them o

Dragon Paintings - What Happens Next?
Showing off the new paintings to the brutally honest art critics at home The dust has settled but before I start the clean up, here's a bit of abstract art, the foundations and remains of my Welsh mountains - my palette from the Dragon's Back. I completed many paintings on the mountains and in the campervan en route. My studio is small but doing this in the van with no mains electricity, worrying about the lights going off and painting by headtorch (thankyou Petzl!) was a big

Dragon's Back Race Day 6 - Cardiff
Cardiff Castle - where the stories will be told How amazing it is to have a hot shower in Cardiff. Washing away the blood, sweat and tears from six days out on the Welsh mountains. Feeling a bit less feral and bit more civilised, I also treat myself to some Welsh cakes and all is good in the world once again. Clean and well fed at the final camp in Cardiff That being said, I was never the starving artist in camp, because the food prepared by the team every day was so good and

Day 5 - Patisserie, Pen Y Fan & Fan Y Big
My first checkpoint today was the infamous La Patisserie in Llandovery. A flat white, crodot and cookie. Ready to go! With all of this energy to burn, I ran on up Pen y Fan and along to Fan Y Big. The landscape was inspiring, the weather was fine and I had great views for miles and not a drop of rain. Huzzah! I dropped back to camp without getting lost on any silly back lanes for a change, then finished the day with some further painting from the day's adventures. Tomorrow C

'Bronze and Rust' - Day 4 - Drygarn Fawr
I had a beautiful run up from Elan village, through the valleys, looking autumnal with bracken turning rusty orange. The weather turned on the top but there were expansive views and a real feeling of remoteness. After very heavy rain for most of the morning, I'd nearly given up hope of good views but we were finally blessed with sunshine and just brief showers, making the journey up to Drygarn Fawr very memorable. Soggy again but gorgeous views. Kept my spirits up with a houm

Day 3 - Cadair Idris and Pumlumon Fawr
Tough conditions again for the soaking runners and soggy artist on day 3 of the Dragon's Back Race 2025. Wet! Wet! Wet! Poor visibility on Cadair Idris at the start of the day and impossible to paint anything but managed to see some runners through and soaked up the atmosphere, took some shots to use later and then ran back down. Drying off back in the van, warming myself with a tea, I deliberated for some time about whether to also go up Pumlumon Fawr. Would the weather be a

Day 2 Dragon's Back - The Rhinogs
A brighter start but eventually beaten by the rain and midges. So this was my beautiful spot for the day: Looking towards Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach, across Llyn Hywel The weather held up long enough to get some paint on and see runners coming through. I actually love these moody skies for my paintings but trying to paint en plein air for these is a big challenge. A lot of my paintings have troubled skies because that's often how it is when running and rac

Dragon's Back Race - Day 1 Snowdonia/Eryri
Raging streams and moody skies! The heavens opened. Streams and rivers were in full spate, the trods and trails were in full spate too. But it is beautiful whatever the weather. I joined the event team late on Saturday and on Sunday I ran up from Conwy Castle into the surrounding hills on the start of the DBR route. Looking back on Conwy So, the weather was a bit brighter on Sunday and I managed to get some painting done. A view of the runner looking back towards the start

No Smoke Without Fire
So, I have returned to the scene. The memories flood back. I stand at Conwy castle and look out to the challenge that lies before everyone tomorrow. The swirling mists rise like smoke. The Dragon's stirring! It is a truly wonderful place to be but I can't help feeling some apprehension, a nervous excitement...and I'm not even doing the race! Today, I'm heading out from the castle, over the early peaks of the race. The weather is poor, with high winds, so we'll see how much pa

Cymru Calling
Race start at Conwy Castle Today is the beginning of an exciting week in Cymru/Wales for the Dragon's Back Race, as artist in residence. I've basically emptied my studio into the campervan and I'm looking forward to a productive week of painting en plein air in the Welsh mountains. The weather may have other ideas though. Rain forecast, but I've got my mountain kit for all weathers and I'll be there come rain or shine. Keep watching for updates on these mountain landscapes -

Painting the Dragon's Back
Artist in Residence at The Dragon's Back Race 2025! A balmy evening training run up Tryfan, Eryri, August 2021. I am thrilled to have been invited to join the Ourea team as Artist in Residence on the Dragon's Back Race. I ran this iconic race four years ago. My first multi-day event, known as one of the toughest mountain stage races in the world. Spanning 380km of the best Welsh countryside. This year's event starts on 1st September from Conwy Castle and finishes on 6th Sept

No.4 Yr Wyddfa
'My Heart's Truth, Sung' Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon Eryri/Snowdonia Cymru March 2024 Acrylic on canvas board 33" x 23" Why I chose this scene/subject: This is a key mountain on the Dragon's Back Race and one of the UK 3 peaks, so it had to be painted! The first time I summited Yr Wyddfa was part of a recce for DBR from Pen-Y-Pass 0ver Crib Goch and back along the Snowdon Horseshoe. It was an unusually clear day with views for miles and roasting. After Crib Goch, there was a bit of a s

Top 10 - No.3 'None Dare Resist'
'None Dare Resist' Tryfan, Eryri/Snowdonia, Cymru/Wales March 2024 Acrylic on canvas board 33" x 23" Why I chose this scene/subject: So, it's on day one of The Dragon's Back Race and as we come off Pen Yr Ole wen, that's the view you get of Tryfan on the second section of day one. It's a popular mountain and a favourite view for walkers and runners. The mountain itself, is quite challenging. It feels like the first proper, truly rocky mountain on the race, with a real scrambl

Scaling the Dragon's Back 2024
None Dare Resist (Tryfan) It's been amazing following this year's DBR and seeing ultra friends and the many regular ultra acquaintances doing so well and putting their hearts and souls into the race. It's really brutal and takes it's toll early on. Well done to everyone I wish that I'd been there to compete again and I'm trying to decide whether to race it next year or be artist in residence (many thanks again to Shane and Ourea Events for the opportunity to do so) which will
