The Why?
 
The title of this piece was taken from Plato's three parts of the soul: Reason, Spirit and Appetite.
 
Spirit, he describes as the emotional, driven and courageous element. 
 
'With Pen Y Ghent under our belts there’s a long drag along rolling footpaths and roads until, turning a bend, Ribblehead viaduct is finally in sight. And then the climb. We’re shrouded in mist. The flagstones are relentless, climbing higher and higher into the clouds. The wind and rain strengthening with each step. I’m joined by a boy, my son’s age, he’s recently taken up fell running and is tackling Whernside. He follows my steps and chatters away keeping my spirits up. Finally the trig appears and the glorious descent back down out of the clouds to the valley. Skipping alongside the slick slabs to the sunny dale. Half way there…'
 
Every year, an estimated 100,000 people take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. It is a great achievement and a beautiful journey in the Yorkshire Dales to return home from and recount your tales.  The reason is individual, the memories personal but we all share the challenge and the joy.
