The Why?
The title of this piece was taken from Plato's three parts of the soul: Reason, Spirit and Appetite.
Reason, he describes as the rational, logical and calculating part.
I am 100 miles into the Spine Race, along the Pennine Way. I make my way off Fountain's Fell and begin my ascent up Pen Y Ghent. There was a reason, it was to prove to myself that I could do it, that I have the potential for more, to be more. The preparation and journey was a carefully calculated challenge, considering every gram of kit and calorie of fuel. My target times were scribbled on a piece of paper in my pocket and etched into my brain.
Every year, an estimated 100,000 people take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. It is a great achievement and a beautiful journey in the Yorkshire Dales to return home from and recount your tales. The reason is individual, the memories personal but we all share the challenge and the joy.
